About Varig
VRG Linhas Aéreas, also known as Nova Varig, was a Brazilian airline that emerged after the end of the operations of the former Varig in 2006, and began operating in the same year, corresponding to the healthy part of Varig, acquired by Varig Log. In November 2007, VRG Linhas Aéreas was sold to Gol Linhas Aéreas, which maintained it as a separate company until the second half of 2008, when the Varig and Gol brands were unified into a single registered name. [1] Since then only a few flights used the name "VARIG", which was being phased out. Currently, the airline's official logo on all aircraft is the mark of GOL Linhas Aéreas.
History
The company was founded in August 2006 after the closure of Varig's activities, corresponding to the economically healthy part of the company. If the old Varig ended its operations, it was possible that Varig Log would also close. And then the assets were bought by the same group of entrepreneurs who had sold varig log months before. [2]
Nova Varig began operations with only two remaining aircraft, as the others were legally blocked and if they were used the company's owners could be arrested.
The first route resumed was the Rio-São Paulo air bridge and in the following months other national and international routes were resumed. The company was practically redone from scratch. However, some suppliers refused to supply the new company because of debts that stayed with The Old Varig. Yet Nova Varig became the champion on time.
Months later, however, the cashier's situation worsened. The departure was the sale of Nova Varig, or the two companies (Varig Log and Nova Varig) would be threatened.
There were proposals from TAM, GOL and LAN for the purchase of the company. The managers preferred to sell to GOL that was willing to buy in the act and the other proposals, even if larger, would take some time to materialize.
Under GOL's management Varig continued independently for a few months resuming national and international routes until in November 2007 the company structures were unified with Gol incorporating the social reason VRG Linhas Aereas S/A
The Varig Brand can still be seen until August 2014, when the latest aircraft were painted in GOL's colors. The reason was gol's financial crisis after the purchase of WebJet.
Currently the rights to the Varig brand are the property of Smiles S.A.
