If you are like me, you've likely never heard of Harbour Grace Airfield. Well, it is a proper part of Canadian aviation history. During the 1920s and 1930s air travel was still a fairly new concept and airline companies and pilots were pushing the limits of air travel to greater and greater lengths. This lead to the construction of an airfield in Harbour Grace with the purpose of serving as a takeoff and stopover point for pilots hoping to conquer the trans-Atlantic crossing. Although it is known by few, the Harbour Grace airfield was Newfoundlands first air facility and is considered to be the first civil airport in North America (NL Encyclopedia). It's most famous pilot was Amelia Earhart, who took off from here on her successful solo crossing of the Atlantic, on May 20th 1932.
This unlit airport is how I found it, with the exception of a home that I decided did not fit the beautiful old hangars and out-house (still working) from years gone by. The ponies were there too.
There is an uphill grade landing east on runway 9 (unmarked) and a large granite dome at the end. Landing in the other direction is tricky due to the granite hill and a downward run.
If you ever get to this incredible part of Canada, take a short trip from St John's and visit this lovely town and its historic airport.
Happy Flying
I have most of your sceneries but this one holds a special place. My dad grew up around there (Carbonear) so I know the area well. As an RCAF Officer he knew about the the historical significance of this airfield and would take us kids up whenever back visiting his brother who settled in Bay Roberts.
Thank you for making this scenery, very appreciated.

I lived in St. john's for a good part of my life .
Back then I was an avid R/C flyer and we frequently flew our models from the historic Harbour Grace airstrip. The single bay hangar on the strip housed a 1946 Ercoupe owned by a local resident and I had the pleasure of flying with him from the Harbour Grace airfield.
Thanks for doing the Harbour Grace strip and thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories .
